W&H Right-of-Way: Other Railroad Sounds

Recorder code:
EW=Evan Werkema, BC=Brad Clark, JM=John Mosbarger, CC=Chris Coleman, MY=Mike Yuhas

ATSF_DET.WAV
A typical Santa Fe hotbox and dragging brake equipment detector, demonstrating one of at least three different electronic "voices" Santa Fe used. This particular one is located at M.P. 28.3 on the double-track main line west of Dalies, NM.

AMFLUSH.WAV
Once common around Amtrak trains was the sound of a Superliner toilet flushing. The sound is demonstrated here by a Superliner on Tr. 4, the eastbound Southwest Chief, at Albuquerque, NM ca.1990. Most if not all Superliners were later retrofitted with retention tanks and a different flushing system that is nearly silent from the outside. EW

ANOUNCE1.WAV
Announcement of the arrival of Amtrak Train #4, the eastbound Southwest Chief at the Albuquerque, NM depot on June 12, 1990. For the Am-detrakors in the audience, note that Train 4 arrived this day at 1:04 pm, a full 20 minutes early! You can hear the train arriving in the background...the lead engine was F40PH #230, second F40PH not known. EW

ANOUNCE2.WAV
Last call anouncement for Train 3, the westbound Southwest Chief at Albuquerque, NM, March 3, 1990. Also note that some passengers are not observing the "Please do not flush while train is standing in station" notices. EW

CR_DET.WAV
Conrail has at least three types of "talking" defect detectors that relay messages to train crews by radio. Each uses a different electronic voice. This sample is of a standard hotbox detector located at E.38th St. near downtown Cleveland, OH. The staticky sound is my fault; please do not adjust your set. EW

CR_HICAR.WAV
This sample illustrates the Conrail high car detector. This particular detector is located near Coit Rd. on Conrail's "Short Line" just south of Collinwood yard. Note that the axle counter is just a *little* bit off. This problem persisted for several months. EW

CR_DED1.WAV
This is a Conrail dragging equipment detector located near North Broadway, Columbus, OH, MP 134 (presumable from Cincinatti). CC

NS_TSA.WAV
A Norfolk Southern "TrackSide Accessory" (talking hotbox detector), located at milepost 168.5 on the east side of Cleveland, OH. EW

NS_TSA2.WAV
Another Norfolk Southern Track Side Accessory, located at milepost 4.4 north of Columbus, OH near Weber Road. The TSA actually repeats this message a second time, but it's identical to the first. CC

SLACK1.WAV
Slack runs in as Santa Fe 5851 west, creeping along at ~5 mph, comes to an abrupt stop at the control signal just west of Belen, NM on July 19, 1989. EW
