AMT_290a.WAV
A somewhat more relaxed Amtrak 290 leads Train 3 out of
Albuquerque on December 14, 1990. The recording was made after
dark, and sounds like it. EW

Amtrak Dash 8-32BWH #505 leads Train 3, the westbound Southwest
Chief, through Isleta, NM on June 13, 1992. These GE's were
used on the Chief for two years before the 800-series
Genesis locomotives arrived. EW
AMT_515.WAV
Another Dash 8-32BWH on Train 3, this time #515, entering
Albuquerque, NM on January 15, 1991. This sample illustrates
the preprogramed crossing sequence that most safety-cab
("widecab") locomotives will blow when the engineer depresses the "horn
pedal." The horn will blow this pattern over and over again until the
engineer depresses the pedal again. EW
ATSF_135.WAV
Another Santa Fe GP60M recording, this time #135 leading four of
its brothers on a hotshot piggyback train at East Lone Star Jct,
TX on August 1, 1990. The GP60M's were less than a month old at
the time. EW
ATSF_149.WAV
Another sample of the pleasing horn found on Santa Fe's GP60M's
and SD75M's is provided by GP60M 149, leading an eastbound
freight at Coal City, IL, on August 17, 1991. EW
ATSF_538.WAV
The whistles on Santa Fe's Dash 8-40BW's aren't nearly as
unique as the GP60M's. Santa Fe #538 whistles as it leads an
eastbound freight into Belen, NM on January 10, 1992. EW
ATSF3829.WAV
Doppler was right! Santa Fe GP50 3829 blows past the depot at
Lebo, KS on August 15, 1991 with an eastbound hotshot. EW
ATSF5360.WAV
Quite possibly the worst horn I've ever heard, and certainly
the worst I've gotten on tape, was the one on Santa Fe SD45
SD45 5360, caught as heading up an eastbound freight at Abo,
NM, July 19, 1989. Somebody get that thing to the shop quick!
EW
ATSF5808.WAV
Santa Fe SD45-2 5808 pilots an eastbound freight into
Belen, NM late in the evening of January 10, 1992.
Even though only two of the three horn bells are sounding,
the engineer still manages to add some finesse to the
crossing whistle.
ATSF7416.WAV
A trio of Santa Fe Dash 8-40B's led by #7416 hustles a piggyback
train westbound at West Baca (Prewitt), NM on August 3, 1989. EW

CSXT GP40 6541, still wearing Baltimore & Ohio paint, whistles
its way under the I-490 overpass in Cleveland, OH, December 18,
1991. EW
CSX_7713.WAV
CSX Dash 8-40CW 7713 hauls a westbound freight past now-closed
VN Tower in Nova, OH on August 21, 1993. What is producing the
echo is beyond me...Nova is dead-flat. EW
12009.wav
Another FNM freight train but this time going through a curve at Avenida
Tecnologico, 1 Km away from the other recording place.
Recorded on September 18th 1997. About fifteen minutes later. VG
5837a.wav
A weird FNM horn (well, it was for me) which could only be heard with this locomotive.
Always pulling the passenger trains, especiually the 08h 35 to Tezuitlan. This one
before passing through the Puebla-Tehuacan freeway on its way back, which goes
through a part of Puebla city. It's 1 Km further away from the 12009 recording.
Recorded on February 16 1995. VG
8216.wav
A really long blow. A FNM passenger train 2 Km away from Puebla station. This locomotive used to pull the 07h 25 passenger train to Oaxaca until it had an accident which sent it to the repairing shop, where it came out from to serve only freight trains.
NS_8523.WAV
Norfolk Southern C36-7 8523, (formerly Norfolk & Western, same
number) is in sole command of a westbound doublestack train on
March 24, 1992. It's whistling for the Myrtle St. crossing in
Erie, PA, one of 11 crossings encountered on the old NKP street-
running in West 19th St. EW

SP_8035.WAV
SP B39-8E 8035 hustles a freight west at Whiteside, KS, just
west of Hutchinson. The beautiful horn is I believe a Nathan
K5H, and has shown up on various other railroads' GE's including
NYSW Dash 8-40B's, NS Dash 8-32B's, and some CSX Dash 8-40C's
and CW's. EW
SP_9340.WAV

C&NW 6892 south was waiting patiently at the diamonds for GBW 313
east to arrive (see the GBW sample). With the GBW train out of
the way, 6892 whistles as it starts moving toward the diamonds.

NG_3499.WAV
One of the last (if not the last) trips of the New Georgia
excursion train from Atlanta to Stone Mountain, GA was made
on July 3, 1994. Ex-Southern FP7 #3499 blows for a crossing
in Clarkston, GA on the way to Stone Mountain. That horn just
belongs on an F-unit somehow. EW
SFS_92.WAV
For the "bells and whistles" fans, here's Santa Fe Southern GP7R
#92 strolling south through Santa Fe, NM on July 31, 1992.
Sounds include crossing bells, engine bell, whistle, and the
gentle murmur of an EMD 567BC. EW
